Hi Gang! Today we were anchored off Komodo Island in Indonesia. The word of the day is WOW! Between the huge Komodo Dragons (the world’s largest lizard that can grow up to 10 feet long and over 300 pounds!) and the beautiful pink sand beach we went to, it was definitely a WOW day.
We didn’t anchor until 11 AM so we were able to sneak in a passenger game and win one Regent point. Dang we’re competitive! Lol.
Our tour was at 11:15 and was 4 hours long. It was called “Komodo Trekking & Pink Beach” and oh what an adventure it was! We started by walking to the Ranger Station in Komodo National Park to get a safety briefing. We then walked for about an hour observing the Komodo Dragons.
This is the only area in the world where they roam free in their own habitat. They said the Baby Komodos stay in the palm trees for 2-3 years since if not, the mother would eat it! Ouch! They were so cool to watch and be so close to them! I wish I could upload a video!!
We then rode in a local boat to the famous Pink Sand Beach also known as Pantai Merah Muda. They say it’s one of only seven pink sand beaches in the world. The sand would get pink when the waves crashed on it. The beautiful color comes from the red pigment on the coral produced by a microorganism called Foraminifera.
They had snorkeling gear for us but we decided to just swim in the crystal clear water. But surprisingly the water was a little chilly! The beach was so isolated and untouched that it made for a great experience.
We got back onboard and got ready for dinner. I’ll do another update tonight.
