Hi Gang! Today we are docked in Boston, Massachusetts. You know… Beantown, Chowdah, Lobstah, and of course Pawk Da Cah! Gotta love the Boston accent!
As for history, there’s tons. Founded in 1630 by Puritans from England, the town’s protected harbor made it a lively port. Shipping and fishing became primary activities during Boston’s colonial period.
During the American Revolution, the city was the setting for several events that proved central to the Revolutionary War, including the Boston Massacre (1770), the Boston Tea Party (1773), Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride (1775), the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston (1775).
The city also developed to be an educational and cultural center for the East Coast. With the colleges of Harvard and MIT both there, Boston has also been called the Athens of America due to its intellectual growth. The city has several important firsts. In 1897, the first Boston marathon was run which is the oldest in America. In 1898 the first subway was built here.
We did a morning panoramic tour of the city. We stopped by Copley Square seeing the Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library. We passed by Boston Common, one of the oldest parks in the US. We saw the Old State House, where the Declaration of Independence was first read, as well as the site of the Boston Massacre. Finally, we visited Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, once a hub for revolutionaries now a lively marketplace.
Since we both have been to Boston several times, after the tour we got back onboard, had lunch and hung out by the pool getting some sun. It was perfect weather today being sunny and 75. I’ll post another update tonight. TGIF to all!
