Hi Folks! You guessed it again… we woke up in a new country today! We’re now in Spain, docked in the port of La Coruna. La Coruna is in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia. It’s known for its rich maritime history, the iconic Tower of Hercules Roman lighthouse, its unique glass front balconies, which reflect the sun, the Plaza de Maria Pita and its Old Town historic center which features narrow streets with shops, boutiques and cafes.
While we’ve never been here before we decided to do a unique all day excursion to walk a portion of “The Way of St James”, also known as the Camino de Santiago. It was depicted in the movie “The Way” starring Martin Sheen. Near La Coruna is the church named Santiago de Compostela where it’s believed the body of the Apostle St James is buried. The church is the end point of a Christian pilgrimage walk. While we’ve been to the church before, we’ve never walked the Camino.
There are many different pilgrimage routes, the most common being the one starting in the French Pyrenees Mountains and walking 500 miles to the church! Don’t worry, we’re not doing that one! We did an abbreviated version of 10 miles of that route. But it still felt pretty satisfying as we walked into the church square with lots of other pilgrims while people cheered as we entered. Amazing!
After our hike, we got a guided tour of Santiago de Compostela and then had free time to walk around the town. It was a very long day (7.5 hours) but very rewarding. We felt like Christians doing a pilgrimage!
After we got back we were so tired we just showered and got room service. But that gave us our second wind and we went to the show. It was called “World Rhythms” and was put on by the Regent singers and dancers. It was described as “A spectacular voyage through a world of music, rhythm and dance.” It covered music from around the world. It was a great show!
After the show we listened to the Regent Signature Orchestra play music called “Latin Fever”. Ya gotta love Latin music! After that we crashed and will get a very good night’s sleep tonight! Tomorrow we are still in Spain and will be docked in Vigo which we’ve never been to before. Can’t wait! Hope everyone had a great Saturday!
