Hi All! We are docked in Copenhagen, Denmark today and we’ll be here over night so we have two days here. We were here earlier this year and really enjoy this city.
Copenhagen is the capital and most populous city in the Kingdom of Denmark, with a population of 1.4 million people. The city is situated on an island and connected to the city of Malmo, Sweden via the Oresund Bridge.
It was originally a Viking fishing village established in the 10th century and became the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century. This morning we did an excursion to both a fun amazement park named Tivoli Gardens as well as Christiansborg Palace.
Tivoli opened on August 15, 1843 and is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world. With 4.25 million visitors per year, Tivoli is the most visited amusement park in Scandinavia and second-most popular seasonal amusement park in the world after Europa-Park. While we didn’t ride any rides it was fun to walk around and hear all the young kids screaming in the thrill rides! The gardens there are beautiful as well.
We also got a tour of Christiansborg Palace. It houses the seat of the Danish parliament, the Folketinget, the Supreme Court , and the Prime Minister ‘s Office. The current castle is the latest in a long line of buildings that have stood on the site since the 12th century , and which has been the seat of central power in Denmark since the 15th century . Inside was some amazing art work and impressive rooms.
And of course a tour of Copenhagen wouldn’t be complete without a stop for a tourist photo at The Little Mermaid statue.
Based on the 1837 fairy tale of the same name by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since its unveiling in 1913. It was funny to see some people almost fall in the water to get a picture with her!
We then got back on the ship and had lunch. We chilled in the afternoon and heading out on an evening excursion for a walk thru the city and to have dinner in one of the quaint neighborhoods. I’ll post another update later tonight. TGIF to all!
