Hi Folks!
Today we are docked in Skagen which is the northernmost town in Denmark. The Port of Skagen (pronounced “skane”) is Denmark’s main fishing port and it also has a thriving tourist industry, attracting 2 million people annually (including us!). It is relatively small with a population of 7,500. It’s actually where the Baltic Sea meets the North Sea.
We did a tour called “Saeby & Voergaard Castle”. We first visited what’s called The Buried Church. The St Lawrence Church was built in the 14th century but major sand migration started in the 16th century and reached the church by the end of the 18th century and engulfed the entire church under sand. Now only the tower of the church is visible. Crazy!
We then drove to the cute little town of Saeby. We did a walking tour thru the town and stopped at the local church which had beautiful painted ceilings over the altar. We then walked down to the marina where there was a statue called the Lady of the Sea. It was a double sided figure of both the Virgin Mary and a mermaid to symbolize a guardian angel for all the sailors both departing and returning.
We then drove to the Voergaard Castle. It is a moated Renaissance Manor House built in 1481. It changed ownership many times and has a significant art collection on the walls. It is now open to the public. We got a guided tour thru the castle which also had an Order of Malta chapel inside. There was also a legend of a woman that lived there and killed a young girl and we saw her blood stain that’s still on the wood floor even after replacing the wood floor boards! Scary!!
After that we drove back to the pier and boarded the ship. It was an all day tour and very interesting. We had beautiful weather and really enjoyed the day. I’ll do another update after dinner. Hope everyone is having a great Thursday!
