Hi Folks! Today we are back in Scotland in Glasgow, which is the most populous city in Scotland with a population of almost 650,000. We actually docked at the port city of Greenock which is about 25 miles away along the River Clyde. It also lies due west from Edinburgh at about 50 miles away.
Glasgow was founded by the Christian missionary Saint Mungo in the 6th century. He established a church there where the present Glasgow Cathedral stands. Today Glasgow is a leading city in Scotland for finance, shopping, industry, culture and fashion. And the people that live there are called Glaswegians. Love it!
But we actually spent the day in the country side and saw Loch Lomond. You know the song (and this will stay in your head all day!)
“You take the high road and I’ll take the low road and I’ll get to Scotland before ya, for me and my true love will never meet again on the Bonnie Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond”. Heard it before??
So we covered a lot of ground on this 8 hour tour. Of course we visited Loch Lomond which is the largest inland body of freshwater in the UK by area covering 22.5 miles in length. Also the Inveraray Castle and town as well as the Kilchurn Castle. The Inveraray Castle was the ancestral home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll and the Kilchurn Castle is the former home of Sir Colin Cambell (Kathy’s great great Grandfather! Lol).
We stopped at Tyndrum and the Green Welly (love the names!) boasting the official title of the smallest UK village with more than one Railway Station. It was built on the site of the famous battle between the Clan MacDougall and Robert the Bruce known as the “Battle of Dalrigh”.
We drove by “Rest & Be Thankful” overlooking a beautiful Glenn. This spot was where military roads crossed and so the soldiers stopped here as a resting place and a place of reflection.
We also stopped in the town of Luss which was built to house miners from a nearby slate mine. It was a tiny picturesque town and was the setting for a famous Scottish TV soap opera named “Take the Highroad”. They say if you skim a stone across the Loch here and get 3 bounces you get your wish!
We also saw the old Luss Church which had the cemetery of the Vikings who inhabited the region years ago. We saw the “Hogback” (grave marker) grave of a Viking King (looked kinda like a banana with the two ends cut off! Lol)
Whew… another long but fun day! We got back to the ship and got ready for dinner. I’ll do another update later tonight. Happy Sunday!
