Wild British Isles – Day 2 – Winchester, England – Final Pics!

Fri May 30, 2025

Hi Folks! We had another glorious day in England with our friends Sue and Stuart. After sleeping in and I think finally catching up on our sleep, we took a drive and walked around another cute town named Winchester. It also had some great architecture and cool history.

King Arthur’s Round Table is located here as well as the Winchester Cathedral (which The New Vaudeville Band wrote a song about it in 1966). If you’re around my age you may remember the song that starts out, “Winchester Cathedral…you’re bringing me down…”. Now that will be in your head all day!

There was also a striking bronze statue at the start of town of King Alfred the Great, as well as a Gothic building called the Guildhall and a 15th century city cross in the town center named Buttercross.

Of course being in England we had to go to a pub. So we found the oldest pub in Winchester called The Royal Oak. That building was built in 1002! And the food was amazing! All in all it was a great day out!

After that we went back and got cleaned up and changed for dinner. We had dinner with our other friend Annie who we also cruised with to Norway two years ago. Sadly, her husband Alan passed away late last year. It was nice seeing her again.

We went to dinner at a place called The Kingfisher on the Quay. It was situated on a freshwater lake and sort of had this Florida vibe to it. The setting was nice and the food was even better. I used the “when in Rome” theory and had the fish n chips. As they say over here, they were “brilliant”!

Tomorrow we drive to Dover, England and board the ship. We’ll hate leaving Sue and Stuart’s place since we’ve had so much fun here but we’re trying to convince them to go on another cruise with us so hopefully we can plan that soon! Hope everyone had a great Friday!
