Hi All! We are once again in Copenhagen and really enjoying it. Since we spent all day in the city yesterday we decided to check out the countryside today. Plus we’ll be back here in September for a day and will see more of the city then.
We were up and out early for an 8:45 AM tour lasting 5 hours called “Fairytale Castes and Countryside”. We first drove to the town of Hillerod and did a guided tour of Fredericksborg Castle. This Renaissance castle was built in the early 17th century by the legendary Danish King Christian IV. Since 1878, Fredericksborg Castle has housed the Museum of Natural History.
We took a tour thru the castle and saw the chapel where the Danish kings are crowned/anointed as well as the great hall where the King greeted everyone. They had many coats of arms honoring several people and countries and they had one for Eisenhower to thank him and the US for their help during WWII.
We then drove to Kronborg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also known as Hamlet’s Castle (since it’s said that Shakespeare used it as inspiration for Hamlet), Kronborg Castle was built by King Frederick II in order to control the shipping in the nearby Sound by collecting the very unpopular “Sound Dues”. From the castle we could see the city of Helsingborg in Sweden from across the Sound.
We then boarded the bus back to the ship where we drove along the coastal road or as they call it, the “Danish Riviera”! We passed by several large mansions and the small Danish castle, the Hermitage. We also got to see the summer castle of the current Danish king (Fredensborg Castle).
We got back onboard the ship and given that we had gotten up early and had a long tour, we chilled in the late afternoon. This traveling around the world is tiring! Lol. I’ll do another update after dinner. Happy Thursday to all!
