Hi Folks! We are docked in Palma de Mallorca today which is the capital of the island of Mallorca off the coast of Spain. We had an early morning excursion so we were out the door by 8:30 AM.
Our tour started with a drive to the hilltop location of Bellver Castle which was built in the 1300’s. It is a former royal stronghold that had a drawbridge for an entrance. The castle is Gothic style and had a circular courtyard and staircases leading to the upper levels with amazing views over Palma and the distant mountains.
We then re-boarded the bus to drive into the city center. We walked thru the historic Old Quarter which is Palma’s most beautiful and impressive section. It’s filled with stately Mallorcan buildings and home to the majestic Palma Cathedral.
With its huge flying buttresses, the Palma Cathedral looms over the Parque de la Mar. it’s interior is truly breathtaking and the rose window is said to be the largest in the world for any Gothic Church. They say the church seats over 2,000 people.
We continued our walk thru the Old Quarter with the guide pointing out the major highlights of the golden years of Mallorcan nobility. We than boarded the bus to go back to the ship and drove along the seafront with the yacht filled marina on one side and hotels and restaurants on the other. It was a really nice tour and we loved Palma!
After the tour we got back on board and had lunch. Then set about doing the non-fun task of starting to pack. Yuk! Can’t believe it’s our last full day. This has been a relatively short cruise for us! I’ll send an update tonight after dinner.
