Hi Gang! We were in Dubrovnik, Croatia today. Croatia used to be part of the country of Yugoslavia along with Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia and Montenegro (the last two we’ll visit on this trip!). The countries were broken out from Yugoslavia in 1991. Today was a national holiday in Croatia celebrating that independence that they call “Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders”. It’s sort of their July 4th and Veteran’s Day rolled into one!
I mentioned yesterday how much we love Dubrovnik but to be honest, this is our third time here (I know, I know, we travel way too much!) so we decided to get out of town and do something different. So we did a tour to a winery (and we don’t even drink wine!) and a boat tour under this cool bridge along with the builder of the bridge!
We first drove along this very scenic route to the town of Drace. We stopped at Edivo Winery where they have a very unique way of storing their wine. They keep it in the ocean! They claim it makes it age faster and gives it a better quality. And when it’s under water there is no temperature change, no pressure change, no light and no noise all of which is best for the wine. They store the white wines for 6 months and the red wines for two years. We didn’t taste it but everyone said it was good. But we did enjoy the meats, cheeses and other snacks they provided!
We then walked down to a pier where we boarded a wooden boat to sail to the town of Klek and pass under this massive bridge called the Peljesac Bridge. The man who ran the project to build it joined us and explained all the details about how it was built. It was built to allow the Croatian people to connect their mainland with another large Croatian island without having to do Border Control with nearby Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was built by a Chinese company and all the pieces of steel and concrete were
made in China and shipped here by boat. Very impressive!
We then drove back to the ship, had our afternoon popcorn snack and chilled. I’ll do another update after dinner! Hope everyone’s Monday is going well!
PS: Even though we didn’t go into the old town of Dubrovnik, I included a bonus pic of it from the last time we were here!
