Hi All! Today is a day of firsts! This is the first time the Regent Seven Seas Grandeur ship has been to the port of Crotone. This is also our Captain’s home town and the first time he has ever sailed his own vessel into this port. And this is our first time here. Pretty cool on all the firsts!
Crotone is located on the southern coast of Italy. Picture it as being on the bottom of the ball of the foot of the boot of Italy. It is in the Calabria region of Italy. It has a population of 64,000 and was founded by the Greeks in 710 BC. The most famous resident was Pythagoras, the mathematician we all know and hated for coming up with the Pythagorean Theory. It states that “In a right angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.” That was a shout out to you geometry nerds!! Lol
While we did spend some time walking around Crotone in the afternoon, in the morning we took an excursion to this small hilltop village (population 2,000) called Santa Severina. It was a cool place and hardly anyone was there other than people from the cruise ship. We saw the castle, the cathedral, the baptistery and the museum.
But the highlight of the trip was lunch at this agriturisimo in Santa Severina with a pool and restaurant. The food was excellent and the setting was really cool. It was hot again today and we really wanted to jump in their pool! We want to come back and stay there!
After we got back from Santa Severina, we took the shuttle into the town of Crotone and walked around the old part of town. There were some cool old churches and buildings but all the shops were closed until later in the day due to I guess their little siesta (sorry grandkids!).
We got back to the ship, got our afternoon popcorn snack and chilled. That’s all for now. I’ll do another update after dinner. Happy Saturday to all!
