Hi Gang! Today we were on PEI (Prince Edward Island) docked in Charlottetown. It has a population of 187,000 and is called the Birthplace of Canada since in 1864 the papers were signed here to create the nation of Canada. Our tour guide said there are over 80 churches here and that other than mussels, the main export is potatoes which is a $1 Billion business annually! That’s a lot of potatoes!
We did an all day tour that covered a lot of the island. We started at a small fishing village called North Rustico where they showed us a lobster trap and showed how the lobsters go in and then can’t get back out. She said a lobster license costs $1 Million!! Even I can’t eat that much lobster!
We then went to the PEI National Park where we stopped at Cavendish Beach. It had these deep red sandstone cliffs along the water as well as some long sandy beaches. It was a very pretty area.
After that we went to the Anne of Green Gables house. It’s the setting for the best selling novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery published in 1908 and set in 1878. It’s about a couple that requested an orphan boy to help them on their farm but ended up with an orphan girl. The main story and many others were based on Anne’s life at the house and surrounding area that we visited.
OK, I admit that I knew nothing about Anne of Green Gables but I loved the one thing I could buy there. A Beaver Tail! If you remember from my update yesterday it’s a fried dough pastry shaped into a beaver’s tail with toppings like whipped cream, crumbled Oreos, cinnamon sugar and chocolate. We got one and it was amazingly delicious! Please don’t anyone buy a franchise and put it in North Carolina or I’ll put on 100 pounds!!
After there we stopped by the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company and sampled a ton of different jellies, jams and preserves. So tasty (but not as good as the Beaver Tail)!
We then got back on the boat and just chilled until dinner. I’ll send another update out after dinner. Hope everyone is having a great Tuesday!
