Canary Islands, Morocco and Northern Europe cruise on Seabourn Ovation – Day 7 – Puerto de La Estaca, El Hierro Island – Part 1!

Wed May 1, 2024

Hi Gang! We made it to our third Canary Island (two more to go!). Today we docked at Puerto de La Estaca on the island of El Hierro. We rented a car and drove all around the island. El Hierro is the smallest and westernmost of the Canary Islands. But although it’s small it is so hilly and the rural roads are so narrow and winding that it took us all day to drive around it.

Another cool thing about this island is that the Prime Meridian was here on El Hierro at the Punta de Orchilla (Lighthouse pic below) until 1884 when it was moved to Greenwich. This was the last bit of land Christopher Columbus saw before sailing to the new world and it was thought to be the end of the world at the time!

We stopped at a lot of different places but I’ll let the pictures do the talking. I’ll do another post tonight after dinner. Happy Hump Day!
