Hi Gang! Just another day in paradise here. Today we docked at Saint Pierre on the island of Martinique. They use the Euro and are French speaking but we won’t hold that against them!
We did a private tour with a really nice woman named Christelle. She took us all over the island but first started by explaining the history of Saint Pierre. It was originally called the “Paris of the Caribbean” since lots of wealthy Parisians came here to vacation but that name quickly changed to the “Caribbean Pompeii” in 1902. That’s when the volcano, Mount Pelee, erupted and killed 20,000 people. Only one person survived and it was because he was in jail locked up down in the basement! Crazy!
So on our tour we saw the jail he survived in, drove thru a rainforest, stopped by a waterfall, went to the black sand beach (due to the volcanic ash), saw the church modeled after Sacre Couer in Paris, drove thru the Capitol city of Fort-de-France, went to the DePaz Rum Distillery and saw their beautiful chalet and gorgeous views across the sugar cane fields and down to the ocean, and as we sailed away we saw the most beautiful rainbow arched all the way across Saint Pierre!
For dinner we went to the Med Yacht Club and ate way too much food. We had starters of octopus, beef carpaccio and a couple fun tapas. For our mains, I went with the veal Osso buco and Kathy had the marinated pork chop. We both had yummy desserts as well. We had to finish this amazing food extravaganza of a cruise ship on a high note!
After dinner we watched the show, pulled some slots and listened to our favorite piano player Justine. Tomorrow is sadly our last day so we had to head back to the room to get packed and put our suitcases in the hallway. We arrive in Barbados tomorrow and will take a tour around the island and head to the airport for a late afternoon flight.
I will do one last update tomorrow or the next day to close out this trip. It’s been an amazing one!
