Pre-Christmas Cruise on Silversea Silver Dawn – Day 10 – St George’s, Grenada!

Wednesday December 20, 2023

Hi All! We were at the island of Grenada today, docked in the Capitol of St. George’s. They call it the “Spice Island” since they grow so many spices here. It also got its name in a funny way. Some Spanish explorers first saw it and thought it looked like their city in Spain called Granada, so the name stuck but they spelled it differently to avoid confusion. The French first claimed the capitol city and called it Port Louie but then the British ruled here and changed it to St George’s. Grenada gained its independence in 1974 and it’s 50 year anniversary is coming up on 2/7/24. I bet that will be quite the party!

The weather was once again sunny and gorgeous and even warmer at like 85 degrees. We did an all day tour and while we got to see the whole island it was way too much driving and the shuttle van’s a/c was not strong enough! So we were a little too warm all day.

We stopped at several different places around the island but as a true chocoholic, the favorite stop was the chocolate factory (with LOTS of free samples!). We also stopped at a waterfall and watched some guy jump like a hundred feet down into the water. Then we realized he was doing it for the tips!  Lol. But is was wild.

At the waterfall they also had several small Mano monkeys in cages. They’re the ones that will come steal your purse or glasses if out of the cage. But they were funny but hate to see them in cages. Watched them peel a banana and eat it!

We also stopped for a nice lunch with all local foods like creole chicken, homemade potato salad and plantains. And chocolate cake for dessert!

By the time we got back we were literally a hot mess! So we showered and chilled for a little bit but being the last night we had to get packed. We then finished the evening having dinner at our favorite place which is the Silver Note. It’s the place that’s like a Manhattan Jazz club with only a few tables, great Jazz and great food. A nice way to finish the cruise!

Tomorrow we arrive in Barbados (which we LOVE!), and since our flight is not until around 5 PM, we booked an excursion around Barbados and then they’ll drop us off at the airport. We’re flying standby again so wish us luck!

PS: As we were leaving Grenada tonight we saw another rainbow so hopefully that’s the start of our good luck tomorrow!
