Alaska – Day 7 – Icy Strait Point – Pics Part 1!

Monday July 17, 2023

Hi Gang! Our lucky streak continued today! We had another day of good weather. It started off a little foggy when we docked at 8 AM but our excursion wasn’t until 12:30 so we had a relaxing morning and waited for the fog to lift.

Our excursion was a wildlife viewing trip which could have included bear sightings but that’s where our luck didn’t come thru since we didn’t see any bears. Bummer! But we did get to see a bald eagle, a golden eagle, a couple otters, a deer crossing the stream and lots of beautiful scenery. We had a guy go with us on our walk thru the woods to the bear viewing stand who carried a rifle in case a bear approached us. Luckily he didn’t have to use it… but we got a picture with him! And the crazy part was that our tour guide was from Cornelius which is just a little north of Charlotte and he just graduated from East Lincoln Charter School which is like two miles from Kathy’s house. Small world!

After that we rode a couple gondolas that took us high above the port to see some amazing views looking out over the water. This area is so visually stunning that it literally takes your breath away!

From there we got back on the ship and got ready for dinner. I had made reservations to the specialty restaurant named Prime 7 which we ate at on our last Regent cruise and loved it. I had asked them to celebrate both our birthdays (Kathy’s is the 10th and mine is the 19th) and they sang happy birthday twice and gave us each a special cake with a candle in it. So sweet!

We then went to the show which was called My Revolution which depicted the British Invasion of music from the likes of Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, the Kinks and of course the Beatles. It was a high energy song and dance production that was amazing! Everyone was up dancing in the aisles!

After the show we ended our day with our normal routine of pulling a few slots and listening to Nano tickle the ivories.

Tomorrow is sort of a sea day but in the early morning from 8-10 AM, we will get as close to Hubbard Glacier as we can and the captain will spin the ship in a circle to let everyone see it up close. We hope to see (and hear!) some “calving” which is when big chunks of ice crack off the glacier and fall in the ocean and create an iceberg. They also call it white thunder since there’s a loud hissing and crashing sound when it happens. Should be cool! Hope everyone’s week started off well!
