Antarctica – Day 17 – Antarctica Experience Day 3!

Monday Jan 23, 2023

Hi Gang! Happy Monday! (Easy for me to say while I’m on vacation, right? Lol). Today was another amazing day of beautiful scenery and lots of whale sightings. We started the morning in an area of the Antarctic Peninsula named Wilhelmina Bay. What we’re finding is when we go inside these bays off the main channel is where we see more whales. We think it’s because it’s easier for the whales to catch their fish and not have to dodge all the ships.

After viewing the scenery we went to listen to the Antarctic speakers. They are always so informative and we always learn a lot. Today we learned about icebergs and the size of Antarctica. For icebergs we learned there are many different names. From largest to smallest they are Icebergs, Growlers, Bergy Bits (my favorite name), Brash Ice and Pancake Ice.

As for the size of Antarctica, we learned that during the winter when everything ices over it is over 7.3 million square miles in size. Very large!

After the speakers we went to have lunch then the captain said there were two huge icebergs ahead and he was going to try to get us as close to them as possible so we could all get some awesome pictures. So they opened up the front bow (ya know where Jack from Titanic hung on the front pole and yelled “I’m the King of the World”!). And no, I did not do that! We did get some awesome pictures of the icebergs. It’s funny since they are like looking at clouds where each one looks like something unique (like a Rorschach inkblot test!). I have some cool iceberg pics that when I can post pictures I’ll send out and you can guess what they look like to you. After that we went in to an area called

Charlotte Bay (YAY Charlotte!) and again saw lots of whales and tons of icebergs. At one point, the captain announced that an iceberg was ready to tip over in the water but we didn’t get there in time to see it. That would have been cool!

Tonight was formal night so we got all gussied up and went to dinner. We got the Filet Mignon, which was cooked to perfection. Yummy! We then went to the main show which was the piano players we liked along with the ships dancers. They played some of the number one hits from the 50’s thru today. Such great music! Then we got a surprise when we came out of the show… they were handing out all these chocolates that were so tasty!

We then finished the evening listening to the same piano players doing requests from the audience. Tomorrow is our last day in Antarctica so we hope to finish strong with lots of great scenery. Hope everyone got their week off to a great start!
