Hi Folks! The word of the day today was WOW! All the Antarctic scenery kept making me just say wow! While I’ve been lucky enough to cruise thru the Norwegian Fjords, the Chilean Fjords and Alaska, and those are all wow moments, Antarctica is a double wow! Every turn was just amazing. And this is just Day One of the Four Day Experience! If you ever get the chance, go for it! And again I’ll say the pictures just don’t do it justice, you had to be there!
To be honest, the day started off very cloudy, windy and snowy! Yes, we got snow today. Some of the pictures may show it coming down but most don’t. The sun tried to peak out but the cloud cover was so low it was hard for it to break thru. Our first stop at 8 AM was supposed to be Palmer Station where the USA has their research facility but it was too windy to get into there so we skipped it.
We did get to cruise thru the Lemaire Channel and the views there were spectacular. We did see some penguins climbing up the mountain but it’s a little blurry when I zoomed in. I circled them in the picture so you can see them.
After that we went to a Q&A session with the speakers who reviewed what we saw yesterday and today and took questions from the audience. Very informative!
We then grabbed a quick lunch and went back to our balcony for the view as we cruised thru the Neumayer Channel. Again, lots of wow moments. They said we could see a small red building which was the Antarctica Post Office but our cameras couldn’t pick it up. (And we forgot to bring our binoculars!! Grrrr.). We saw a Viking cruise ship docked near where the post office was supposed to be but we couldn’t see anyone getting off and going on land. It was a much smaller ship than ours.
All that viewing made us tired and since we’ve spent so much time in South America we took our afternoon siesta! After that we got cleaned up and went to dinner. Another great meal was followed by watching some NFL Football! There are lots of football fans here so the bar with the TV is packed on game day. Hope your favorite team wins!
Tomorrow is another Antarctica Experience Day! And more NFL Playoff football!! Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!
PS: They told us the Internet signal is not great in Antarctica so I may or may not be able to post picture later tonight. If not, I’ll post them in a few days when we’re back closer to mainland South America.
