Antarctica – Day 12 – Ushuaia, Argentina and Glacier Alley!

Wednesday Jan 18, 2023

Hi All! Yesterday’s key word was penguins, today it was GLACIERS! We had to get up early today (6:30 AM) to see all the glaciers along glacier alley. I must say I’m thankful for both room service and having a rear balcony. We had the protection from the wind on our balcony and a hot breakfast at our finger tips while enjoying this amazing display of scenery.

As I mentioned the other day, Glacier Alley has 6 glaciers named after 6 countries and the beauty of it was we could relax on our balcony and watch them all go by. I’m also thankful for Kathy since she had already booked this cruise before I met her and had also booked the rear balcony so I fell into a great adventure with a great person!

After watching the glaciers we got ready to head to shore for our excursion. We docked in the town of Ushuaia, which is nicknamed “The End of the World” and claims the title of the World’s Southernmost city. It is the capitol of the Tierra del Fuego region. We actually visited the post office “at the end of world” which was really cool.

We spent the afternoon touring Tierra del Fuego National Park, which is Spanish for “Land of the fire” which legend has it was named by Ferdinand Magellan due to all the brush fires the natives lit when he found the area. It is an archipelago off the southern most tip of the South American mainland across the Strait of Magellan. It was so beautiful and we actually saw three wild horses with a baby horse. So cool!

I won’t spend a lot of time describing the scenery and just let the pictures speak for themselves. Tomorrow the ship will be going around Cape Horn and then crossing the infamous Drake Passage reported to be the most treacherous seas in the world. Yikes! All prayers are accepted for a smooth passage! Pictures will come later!
