Croatia – Day 5 – Dubrovnik

Well folks we kept all our streaks alive today… warm, sunny day… check. No rain… check. Ancient, walled city… check. Tuk Tuk Tour… check. And worst streak of all… spotty internet!! Lol. Oh well, we’re on vacation so we should be off the grid anyway!

And I have one word for Dubrovnik… WOW!! It is so visually stunning and the history is amazing. If you ever get a chance to come here, do it. I know now why they call it the Pearl of the Adriatic.

It is also the setting for several Game of Thrones scenes. The city walls were often shown as the fortifications of King’s Landing and there’s a set of steps that were patterned after Rome’s Spanish steps and these were used as part of Cersei’s nude walk of shame! Kathy and I even took our picture there… but we kept our clothes on! Lol

So in the morning we did our own thing and walked the walls of the city. It’s about a mile and a half long and the views both out to sea as well as within the city walls were incredible. I could have posted a hundred pictures and I know you wouldn’t be bored. There were lots of churches (41 within those city walls!) and lots of terra cotta tiled roofs!

We then went back to the boat for lunch (of course!) and didn’t really have time to chill since we were tendered and it took some time to get back and forth and we had a tour in the afternoon to get to.

We got back to Dubrovnik at 2:45 and met our tour guide John who would take us on a four hour tour. We started the first hour or so with a walk within the old town walls. He was a fantastic tour guide and had lots of interesting stories. Like how the word salary came from the word salt since back in the Roman times salt was a precious commodity and the Romans paid their people in salt and called it sala which eventually became salary!

He also told us how St Blaise became their patron saint. It seems that St Peter came to St Blaise in a vision and told him Venice would attack the city the next day and to wake everyone up and prepare to defend the city. Venice troops attacked the next day but the Dubrovnik people were prepared and saved their city so they made St Blaise their patron site.

After all that walking it was nice to sit back and let the Tuk Tuk take us all over the suburbs and up to Mount Srd looking over the city for great views and an amazing sunset. I’ll let the pictures do the talking on that part of the tour!

We ended with a nice plate of traditional Croatian meats and cheeses in this quaint little restaurant. The Tuk Tuk then took us back to the gate to get into the walled city so we could catch our tender boat back to the ship.

It was a great day and I think Dubrovnik may have been my favorite stop so far! On to Hvar!

PS: Yep, you guessed it… the streak of spotty internet means once again you’ll get the text portion first and the pics later!
