Hi Gang! Today we were in beautiful Juneau! The state capitol of Alaska and the only state capitol with no roads connecting to it. That’s right, you can’t drive here but can only arrive via boat or plane. Heard an interesting thing on our tour today. When the local high school kids travel (via boat or plane again) to an away football game, since they take the whole team and the cheerleaders, it’s too expensive to stay in hotels so the home team houses the away team at their own home and vice versa! Great way to build relationships with arch rivals!
So today we took a tour to see both whales and the largest glacier in the area, which is the Mendenhall Glacier. Due to the various pics I decided to do two blog entries today.
Oh, and how lucky we were with the weather today! They had been calling for an ”Atmospheric River” which is a meteorology term for whenever you get a huge concentration of rain at one time, sometimes up to 5-7 inches in a day! Luckily we got NO RAIN! It was overcast all day but dry.
We had planned to get off the ship at 7 AM for our excursion (but due to delays, which I still think was from the fire yesterday but they won’t say that!) we ended up not getting off until after 8. Luckily, due to many people on our tour being on our ship, they postponed the tour start time to 8:30.
We got off the ship and shopped for a little, then got on our tour bus to go to the marina to board the ship to go see the whales.
We had lots of whale sightings but it’s so hard to capture a really good pic of the whale since you never know where and for how long they’ll come up. Once again I wish I could show you a video since that was easier to run the video and capture the whales when they finally came up. I got a few pics but you have to look closely to see the black portion of the whale in the water line.
That’s all for now and I’ll finish with the Glaciers on the next entry.
