Well gang we officially landed in The Last Frontier! First stop, the salmon capitol of the world, one of the rainiest cities in America that receives 261% more rain than the national average, and the first incorporated town of Alaska in 1900… Ketchikan!
We set our clocks back an hour last night so we got an extra hour sleep. The day started out with a pinch of sun but then quickly got foggy and rainy. So we decided to have a relaxing breakfast (but a big one! Lol) and not get off the ship until around 11 for our excursion of the float plane into the Misty Fjords. If you’ve never been on a float plane, which takes off and lands via water, it is quite the experience! But alas, the rainy Ketchikan did us in… our excursion was cancelled due to weather. We were all really bummed but safety does come first.
So Kathy and I did a tour around the area and Dan and Jen walked the town and did stuff on the boat. We were hoping to see some bears when we stopped near a salmon hatchery but didn’t see any. But we did see a Bear Crossing sign! We then went to a Totem Pole park where there were lots of Totem Poles all with meanings about the indigenous people of Alaska.
After the tour they dropped us off in the shopping area called Creekside which used to be the “Red Light District” where the local Madam named Dolly made a good living serving all the salmon fishermen. I included a funny sign from the side of her house.
Of course as luck would have it the weather got gorgeous in the afternoon and as we sailed away! So most of the rest of my pictures are of the gorgeous weather and scenery.
We had a nice dinner, played some trivia, went to a game show called Finish That Lyric, played Name That Tune to all Queen music, and went to the main show with Dancers and Showgirls.
After all that fun we finally crashed to get rested for another port day in Sitka! Hope everyone had a great day!
