Maine Coast Trip – Day 1 – Kennebunkport

Hi Gang! We’re on the road again for a quick 4 day weekend up to the coast of Maine to celebrate Kathy’s birthday. As you know we fly standby and let me tell you, it is not for the faint of heart! But you can’t beat the price!

We started off planning to fly to Portland, Maine. Then those seats filled up. So we tried for Manchester, New Hampshire and those seats filled up. So we tried flying to Boston and we got the last two seats! Whew!

We got a rental car and drove to one of the cutest towns I’ve been to called Kennebunkport. You probably have heard of it since the “Bush Compound” is there. It’s where George H. W. Bush, the 41st President and his wife Barbara went for their summer home. Now that they have passed  George W Bush, the 43rd President and his wife Laura summer there. I think they were there but of course we didn’t see them. We did see the Secret Service though!

We drove from Boston’s Logan airport straight to Kennebunkport. Surprisingly, the traffic out of Boston was not bad. Of course the first thing we had to get was some seafood! So we got a lobster roll and some clam strips at The Clam Shack, a Bush family favorite. It was soooo good!

Then we took a trolley tour around the area where they showed us all the cool houses, the Bush Compound which is on Walker Point (Walker was the name from George’s mother’s side) and the beautiful and quaint St Ann’s chapel, which is right on the water, and it’s where George and Barbara were married as well as where George parachuted in on his 85th and 90th birthday! There is an outdoor area where they have their morning service looking out over the water. Just beautiful!

After our trolley tour we walked around the shops where the town of Kennebunkport meets the town of Kennebunk. And then drove all around the area to both Cape Porpoise Harbor and Goose Rocks Beach. Both were cute little beach towns with beautiful houses. I loved all the large Adirondack chairs set up in circles around an outdoor fire pit at a lot of the houses.

We then caught the most beautiful sunset looking out from St Ann’s chapel. Just breathtaking!

We then drove to our AirBnB in the little town of Arundel just south of Portland. We plan to spend the day in Portland tomorrow. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
