Colonia del Sacramento – Day 1 – Wed 3/11/20

Well gang, I made it to Uruguay! And I found out it’s currently one of the countries that does not yet have any cases of the Coronavirus. I hope it stays that way!

So I said yesterday they kept calling for rain and it never did… well they stored it all up for today. I got a little lucky since it wasn’t raining when I boarded the ferry at noon and even when I got off around 1:30 and walked to my hotel it still wasn’t raining. But right about 2:00 it started down pouring and rained hard the rest of the day. So I didn’t get out until later in the evening when I went to dinner.

So the town I’m in now, Colonia Del Sacramento, is almost directly across the river from Buenos Aires. The ferry worked great and I just chilled on the ride over even though it was packed with people.

Colonia is one of the oldest towns in Uruguay and capital of what they call the Colonia Department. It has a population of around 27,000. Its Historic District is a UNESCO World Heritage site and I hope to explore it all tomorrow.

I decided to try out one of their beef grilling places for dinner since there’s a big rivalry between Uruguay and Argentina as to which has the better beef. Uruguay is one of the top 5 beef producing countries in the world and rivals Argentina in beef exportation. It is a country where the number of cattle actually outnumber the number of people almost 4 to 1 (population of about 3 million and about 12 million cattle).

I looked at the beef section of the menu and asked the waiter “Cual es el mejor?” which means “which is the best?”. He said the “baby beef”, which I believe is sorta like veal but the calf is just a little older. I ordered it and it was so good, but huge. They served it with French fries and a tasty salsa and chimichurri sauce.

Well that’s it for today. It ended up being a nice lazy day to catch up on my sleep. I needed that! I only have two pictures to share but I’m sure I’ll have more tomorrow. Happy Hump Day to all!
