Well I got tricked by the weather forecast again. They said it was going to rain all day so of course I planned my churches and pubs tour for today. Well it didn’t rain at all! So I modified it slightly to take in mostly outdoor music and also do a group walking tour along with checking out the two main churches in town.
Pics 1-2 are the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas. The church was built in 1320 and is dedicated to St Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. Columbus was said to have worshipped her in 1477 while planning his American voyage and looking for crew members.
Pics 3-5 are of the Galway Cathedral (full name – The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas – whew, that’s a mouth full!). The Cathedral was opened by American Cardinal Cushing (Archbishop of Boston) in 1965. It’s one of the last of the great stone churches built in Europe. Note the mosaic of JFK praying. He was nearly a saint to the Irish people at the time this Cathedral was built.
Pics 6-7 were taken while I was walking along some of the canals to get to the Cathedral. Note the guy fly fishing in the stream. They say there’s a lot of trout and salmon in those waters.
Pic 8 was when I took the free walking tour with the Galway Civic Trust group through the medieval portion of the city known as the Latin Quarter. The history of this city is amazing. (But I won’t bore you with it… you owe me one! Lol)
The final pics 9-16 are of one indoor venue and since the weather turned nice, I checked out all the outdoor music options and included pics of those. Some of these people are really good. (Heck, Ed Sheeran got his start in these exact streets and wrote a song called Galway Girl). As you can see, they come in all ages, especially the really young girl in the last pic. The live music scene is really what makes Galway such a fun place to visit.
Well that’s all for now. Happy Thursday!
