Galway – Day 1

Well I made it to Galway! Took a couple buses to get here but it wasn’t too bad. Pretty much just got checked into my AirBnB, unpacked and went and explored the city.

Galway has a population of about 76,000 and is a lively university town. Until the recession hit in 2008, it was the fastest growing city in Ireland. And it’s still its most international city, as one out of every four residents was born outside of Ireland.

The middle of the city has this nice large park named after John F Kennedy. I also included a pic of a bust of JFK commemorating his visit to the park where he gave a speech to thousands of Irish people. They love him since he was America’s first Irish-Catholic President. He gave that speech in June 1963, just a few months before his death.

There’s also a big arts festival going on (I guess that’s why there’s that big swan there!) so they have all kinds of free art exhibits around the city as well as fun county fair type food.

I like that there are a lot of streets that are pedestrian only. Creates a nice vibe and all along the way there are street performers as well.

I also included pics of several of the canal areas. People sometimes call Galway the Venice of Ireland.

Well that’s it for now. Hope everyone is having a great start to their week!
