St-Jean-de-Luz – Day 1

Sunday 5/19/19 – Just like the other day, I should have named this blog entry Carcassonne – Final Day – Part 2. My train did not leave Carcassonne until late in the day and due to a couple long layovers and two train connections I didn’t get to St-Jean-de-Luz until after 9 PM. So the first few pics are some from last night after dark when the castle is all lit up. Looks so cool and mysterious.

Also included some from throughout the town. Check out the horse’s cool hats and the one is actually laughing at my jokes! Lol.

The last four are from inside the church of St. Nazaire. Notice the Romanesque arches of the nave and the delicate vaulted Gothic arches over the altar and transepts. They say this is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in southern France. The column of stained glass windows behind the altar are patterned after St. Chappelle church in Paris. The large rose shaped stained glass window is a replica of the one in Notre Dame in Paris but just smaller. And the sculpture is called the Pieta. The most famous one was done by Michelangelo and is in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. It represents Jesus’s mother Mary holding him right after he came down from the cross. It’s incredible how the sculptor can show the emotion in Mary’s face using stone.

Well tomorrow I’ll tell you all about St-Jean-de-Luz and the Basque region of France. Hope everyone had a great weekend. For those Game of Thrones fans, enjoy the final episode!
