Arles – Day 2 – Part 2

Monday 5/13/19 – Part 2 – As I mentioned in my other post, this entry will focus on two Hill towns in the Luberon region named Gordes and Roussillon.

The first 6 pics are of the town of Gordes. As you can see from the first pic, it is dramatically situated on the top of the hill. In the 1960’s, Gordes was a ghost town of derelict buildings with no economy. Today Gordes is renovated top to bottom and filled with mostly wealthy people. Many Parisian big shots and moneyed foreigners invested heavily, restoring dream homes and putting property values out of sight for locals. Beyond it’s stunning views, the village has pretty lanes lined with trendy boutiques and restaurants.

The remaining 10 pictures are of the town of Roussillon. With all the trendy charm of Santa Fe on a hilltop, photogenic Roussillon is a tourist hit. An enormous deposit of ochre, which gives the earth and its buildings that distinctive reddish color, provided this village with its economic base until shortly after World War II. It now relies solely on tourism.

Both of these were beautiful villages as the pictures show. It was a great all day tour. Hope you enjoyed it. Happy Monday!
