Well, sort of southwest. I decided today since I had seen the northern most tip of the island, I had to check out the southern most tip, which is aptly called South Point and is really in the southwest portion of the island. FACTOID for my trivia teammates, this location is actually the furthest point south in the United States. Not Key West as many people think. Of course like the northern tip it too is extremely windy, I think even windier than up north. There was also a wind farm here as well. I included a pic of the rocky coast line and you can see the wind mills in the background. They say the currents from this point are uninterrupted all the way to Antarctica. The pic of the actual southern most point is the lava rock looking beach with a brown mossy area. Of course I couldn't be happy just seeing the southern most tip, I had to head across to see the eastern most tip. FACTOID #2 - Scientists have set up testing areas here to test the "virgin air" since it has drifted over the landless Pacific Ocean for weeks before getting here. I have to admit, it didn't smell any different! LOL. The pic of the eastern most tip is the one with all the white swell. I also visited a really cool black sand beach and a man made pool right along the ocean that's both warmed by an underground spring from the lava as well as fresh ocean water mixing in it during high tide. Very cool! There is also a green sand beach (I'm not kidding) but I couldn't get to it because you needed a 4WD. FACTOID #3 - the green sand gets its color from a large deposit of a semi-precious gem called olivine that mixes with black sand which both are caused by the volcano. Speaking of the volcano, I'm heading there on Monday but most of the lava is underground and it's not now flowing into the ocean where it's easier to see. In an effort to help it along, I decided to stop at a few church sites for extra "prayers". As you know from my past blogs, I support religious diversity so I visited both a Catholic and a Buddhist church (Note I get 5 bonus points for also finding a Buddhist cemetery!). But actually, legend here says you have to give a human sacrifice to the goddess Pele, the goddess of the volcano. I'm about ready to hand over my landlady as a sacrifice since her darn internet connection keeps going down! Just kidding people, puh-leaze! Well, sorta, kinda! Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Jeff
